She was the only child of five children, and was the oldest of five children to Geraldine Russell and Roy William Russell. She was the youngest of four siblings: Kenneth, Wallace, Jamie and Thomas. Her father was a 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and her mother was an actress as part of a road troupe. Her mother was the one who arranged for her to attend piano lessons early on, and Jane was also interested in drama , and was a part of the stage production group at Van Nuys High School. Following the death and death of her father, in her late 40s, Jane decided to become an experienced designer. But, she ended up working as a receptionist. Jane later became interested in modeling and studying drama and acting with Max Reinhardt's Theatrical Workshop at the urging of her mother.
